May 11, 2008 - Lilly Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Houston, Texas – Announced today they will host a four hour symposium to dialogue on race and religion, and how it has impacted the Church in the 21st century. The symposium brings together a diversified panel of Pastors and Scholars to examine the African American worship experience, and explore the development of the preaching styles in the Black and White Churches from a theological and sociological perspective.
We will address and examine some of the misconceptions of the African American pulpit, stated Lilly Grove’s pastor, Rev. Terry K. Anderson. As a preacher, I am charged to “Preach the Word, be prepared in season and out of season, correct, rebuke and encourage. My style of preaching may, at times, be misunderstood by some of my own non-African American members who do not understand the historical development of the preaching experiences in the Black Church,” continues Anderson.
Other challenging issues regarding current events on politics and religion in America will be addressed to increase our knowledge and understanding of the preaching and worship experiences in the Black Church and White Church. Panelists will explore the similarities and differences between both churches so that we, as the Body of Christ, may be unified around the Word of God and more effectively carry out The Great Commission of our God together.
